The cumulative sales of the best album released by the group BTS in Japan exceeded 1 million, setting another record.
According to the latest chart of "Weekly Album Ranking" released by Oricon in Japan on the 6th (Korea Standard Time), 3,000 albums of "BTS, The Best" were sold a week from December 27 last year to the 2nd of this month.
Reflecting this, the cumulative sales of "BTS, The Best" totaled 1 million and became the 14th overseas artist to sell more than 1 million copies based on the "Weekly Album Ranking" chart.
BTS' record is a meaningful achievement as a Korean artist.
In the meantime, BoA was the only Korean singer who achieved a "million seller" in the Oricon tally based on album sales.
"Asia's Star" BoA sold more than 1 million copies of her second album "VALENTI" released in Japan in 2003 and her best album "BEST OF SOUL" in 2005.
BTS received "Million" certification from the Japan Record Association as more than 1 million single "Lights/Boy With Luv" released in Japan in 2019, but this time it exceeded 1 million album sales.
Oricon reported BTS' news on its official website and explained, "It is the first time in 16 years and 7 months that an overseas artist has achieved a million (1 million copies) record in the album category."
They added, "It is the first time in 17 years and 9 months that the cumulative sales of albums released by overseas male artists have reached 1 million copies since the band Queen in 2004."
Overseas male artists with more than 1 million single albums sold based on Oricon count include Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi, Scatman John, The Beatles, and Queen.
BTS, The Best is an album that has been released by collecting single and album tracks released in Japan for about four years since 2017.
The album contains 23 original Japanese songs such as "Film Out" and "Your Eyes Tell" and the Japanese version of existing hit songs, and has gained huge popularity since the beginning of its release.
In the first week of its release alone, 782,000 copies were sold, and it went straight to No. 1 in the weekly album rankings (June 28). It is the highest ever considering the sales volume of overseas male artists in the first week alone.
According to the annual data released by Oricon on the 22nd of last month, the album sold 993,000 copies last year, ranking first among all albums sold in Japan as of 2021. It is the first time that an overseas group has topped the annual album chart.
It is also the first time in 37 years as an overseas artist since Michael Jackson's masterpiece "Thriller" in 1984.
